Chapter 12: Middletown, Calif.
Tom Horn was just riding into Middletown, California and was heading for the Marshal's office. Marshal Rusty Cole was a man that Horn had crossed paths with upon the odd occasion, mostly when Horn wanted to identify a dead bounty. The local law's office was right in the middle of the city, across from the Middletown Stagecoach Station. Next to the Lake County House. By far the most prominent building in the city.
The bounty hunter pulled to a stop in front of the jailhouse and had a look around before he stepped down off his horse. Calistoga Street of Middletown was so broad that the city never seemed to be crowded, unlike such places as Stockton or San Francisco. Not noticing any dangerous elements he moved up to the Marshal's door and held up his fist and knocked twice.
"Who the Hell is it now?" a gruff voice came from inside the building.
"It's Tom Horn!" the bounty hunter called out.
Marshal Cole was a big man, some six-feet-six-inches tall and mighty wide. Broad at the shoulders and big in the gut. He was an imposing figure in the Middletown community. A town that was far from tame in regards to outlaws. This is where the stagecoaches transported the payroll for the quicksilver mines. The Bradford, the Bullion, and the Great Western Mine. All located south of the city, the closest being the Great Western just a mile outside of town.
Hoss, as many of the town's folks called Marshal Cole, was not unaccustomed to harsh and reckless men such as Tom Horn. People out this way are harder than most, and over time they have learned to deal with the varmints that travel through.
"You're becoming a nuisance to me, Horn," Hoss warned as he opened the door.
The Marshal took his ten-gallon hat from the peg in the wall, slipped it on his head and walked out onto the porch. Stopping Horn from entering and making himself comfortable.
"Most men that become a nuisance to me end up in my jail cell for a spell," the Marshal said. "The only reason I ain't locked you up yet is, I find you so goddamned vile the sight of you turns my stomach."
"Are you going to stand there and bark, or do you bite too?" Horn asked sarcastically.
"You best not push me," the lawman growled. "I ain't like most of the daisies you bushwhack from the bushes. I'll stick a revolver up your ass and pull the trigger until it goes click."
"All I want to know is the whereabouts of the Amos Trent Brothers," Horn said. "I come here to do a job in the name of the Federal Government."
"Don't give me that horseshit that you tell the rest of those dumb bastards you deal with," Hoss retorted. "I don't give a fuck who you claim you work for. This is my town, and I have no intention of helping you with shit you dickless son of a bitch. Now, get off my fucking porch you assassin you.
